I've just obtained a Zen Creative MP3 player, but have no idea how to do anything with it. I have a slight suspicion that it may well be up the spout, but want to at least try to repair it. I have found a USB cable to go in, and when plugged in it shows its welcome screen, but does not respond to the keypad. It does not show up in windows explorer, and the battery appears not to work, as if removed from USB it does not fire up at all. Any ideas how to repair?

Repair isn't an option for these devices, really.
Questions:
Did you purchase it new? There are many MP3 players in the Zen series, which model is it please? You mention that you "found a usb cable", did you install anything on the computer before you plugged it in? Did you charge the device fully before turning it on? Has it worked before today? Do you have the cable that came with the device?
I had this problem with 1 of my 5 Creative devices, but I continue to buy Creative whenever possible because of the excellent customer service. If you bought the device new, get in touch, they arranged to have the device picked up from me, and shipped me a new one within 48 hours.Super geek.0 -
Sorry, Micro, so I can replace the battery! It has a common type of USB connector on the top, and I just so happened to have a compatible cable from a camera or somthing. I don't know if it's new, I found it in a waste electricals bag. Don't ask. Nothing has shown up on the computer relating to it.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Is there any software that came with the MP3 player?0

Again, the only thing I have is the player itself. I have no idea what came with it, so would like to know if there's any software I need!Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

You will need the Creative Zen software

Micro, ok, same as mine. You're going to need the drivers from the Creative website, a new battery (by the sounds of things, I got 4 in a sale for a quid each *highfive*), the cable attachment is Mini-USB but any MiniUSB cable will do.
the drivers seem to be available here, thoug I have never used this site before. I can't see them on the Creative site.Super geek.0 -
Excellent. Is it possible to work it while on USB power? Also, it tells me that the device is not connected when I run the updater software.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Aye, it is. So long as you don't try and access it, by opening it in Windows Explorer or Creative Organizer. Don't plug in the device until prompted when running the installer, perhaps?Super geek.0
