Smell of fumes inside the car?

I have noticed it a few months ago but it died off but today it was back with avengance. About 5 mins after i set off and for about 10 mins it smelt very strongly of fumes/petrol.

Cannot see any drips from under the car and about 15 mins later it died off but returned 45 mins later.

Any clues?

There will probably be a breather pipe that goes either from the engine or the rocker cover, to the air filter box, which may be responsible for petrol/oily smells if split, which often get dragged in through the air blowers. Also, if there are any leaks, petrol is a solvent so there will probably be clean patches around any leaks.

What is the car by the way as it may help if people know. Also try asking on forums that specialise in the brand of car

Knowing what car it is and what fuel type will help. It could be a number of things including blowing injectors, faulty carbon canister, leaking fuel pump seals.

my friends car caught on fire, he later told us that he has been able to smell petrol for weeks!

It was a tiny fracture on a fuel line spraying a fine mist over the nice hot enginge!

I had my partner look at it and he said the sump (?) (or sump outlet) was cracked?

I have no idea what they are but would that contribute to the smell

The sump contains the engine oil, so if is more of an oily smell then possibly yes. Although as the sump is right at the bottom of the engine I would think it's less likely to be that. If your sump's cracked and it's leaking oil it will need fixing though anyway.
