Painting wooden floorboards.. advice

I'm considering painting my floorboards (two bedroom floors and staircase). Whats the best form of paint to use ie: emulsion, gloss??

Thanks in advance :)

i would say varnish or a stained varnish, i've never been asked to put emulsion or gloss on floorboards tbh.

it needs a good sanding down mind, you can hire the right gear from HSS, and make sure all nails are hammerd down.

dulux diamond glaze is what i use but it's not cheap.
  • My niece did it with a colour wash which she made by watering down emulsion. She applied 2 or 3 coats 'til she was happy with the shade, then varnished it.

I will be painting the stairs this weekend, with a special, water based B&Q paint for floors.

I'll post again after I've done it & let you know how I get on!!

I'll check that out at local B&Q.

Thanks for replies. Boards have previously been painted white in one room and blue in the other room and staircase. All needs re-doing now tho' after re-wire of house.

I recently did my lounge and bedroom floorboards with whte paint. Used International Paints quick drying floor paint. Needed 2 coats and took literally 4 days to dry properly but looks awesome.

How's it standing up to wear - I've done a couple of the stair treadfs in black & left the rest satin white & I don't like the look so far!

Thinking of going all white, but concerned how long it'll look as good as you say!!

Any luck with the B&Q floor paint? I went to check it out today at the local store. Tin dosen't say what the coverage is and the shop only had 1 tin of the colour I want. So, decided to have a further think about it.

No luck with the black - it seems to cover Ok but it isn't the right color scheme on the stairs - white & black.

So Mrs V is getting a tin of white, as mentioned above & we'll try it all one colour.

    I'll report back soon!

Holding up great ... had ladders on it and dragged chest of drawers across it without any marks at all. The key is to let it dry properly (and go for 2 good coats (2nd coat went on after 12 hours))...any marks I do have are from using it before it it dried. Literally 4 days with the radiators on full belt 24 hours a day.
