Help needed,Low income going to Dublin

Hi all i am on low income and need a little help,We won a comp with free flights and hotel to Dublin great,It is my partners 40th birthday on 13th Oxctober and we are flying on the 14th,Staying in a hotel called The Alexander,Not sure if any meals are included. So any ideas or discounts to use near by would be great,Places to visit etc.
We are flying from Heathrow which is quite far from us so would like to book a room the night before our flight near to Heathrow airport any where would be great but must be cheap so any discount vouchers etc would be great or ideas of the cheapest places to stay.
Really need to eat out in Dublin as cheap and cheerful as possible as never been on holiday to there before.
Hope you have some ideas all gratefully recieved,

Can't offer any tips about where to eat extra, but you can check out the N Ireland board.

Whitty999 , Dublin is a fantastic place to visit and you will have a great time . I highly reccomend O'Neills pub in Suffok St , as a place to eat. It is part of the O'Neills chain that we have over here but the food will set you up for the whole day and is excellent value. I think the first thing to do , once there, is to get on one of tour buses which take you around Dublin. Then you can get a look at the different sites , get your bearings and then go back to what caught your eye. Have a great time .

ps - Dublin is in Southern Ireland x

Dublin is a great city but boy is it expensive .It's not called the" RIP Off Republic" for nothing .If you intend to shop for small items bring you own plastic carrier bag. The shops charge 15 cent per plastic bag thats the law . Big shops use paper bags to avoid this .

For ideas where to eat , sightseeing ect try posting on the Northern Ireland board usually someone on there who knows .
Dont forget your euro money .All Uk banks will charge for cash withdrawals in Dublin unless you use Nationwide debit card .It's not all bad if you dont smoke its great ( I dont smoke ),no smoking in bars ,hotels ,or public places .If you do smoke you smoke on the street ! thats the law .
The bus Tours are good value about 10 euro you can hop on and off at different points. you may be able to get a free map in the hotel .The Alexander Hotel is near the city centre but still a good 30 minute walk from the bus station where the airport bus would drop you off .You may be able to get a bus or tram ( not the airport bus )to drop you off near the hotel Ask at the bus station . Not sure about the trams ( they are called luas ) but on the local buses you need the correct fare .The drivers cant give you change .Taxis in Dublin are all metered and are really expensive .

    is London in Scotland ?
  • If you eat your main meal at lunch time you can take advantage of the early bird menus in the temple bar area - we saved a few euros doing that.
  • Eliza Blues in Temple Bar Over looking the Liffey is highley recommended. We went last weekend for my mums Birthday and booked table for 6.30 so we could eat off the Earley Bird Menu but by the time you've order and you get your meal it 7 so it not to early.

Also eaten at a bar in Temple Bar a few yearsago think it was called the Powerhouse which was lovely huge potions and dont remember it being expensive.

Theres a farmers market in Temple Bar on a Saturday where you can get homemade sausage barms etc
I work to support my shopping habit
  • To be honest I didn't find dublin to be expensive, theres a lot of competition so loads of food places are doing specials and I got some great clothes bargains at Dennys (primark), a/wear and a couple of other places. They do a very good breakfast at the kingfisher just over the raod from oconnel street and in o coneel street itself is a place called kylemore that does a self service style thing and the food is very good.
Get a citytour bus ticket, 12 e's and your can get around the city for 24 hours, kilmainham jail is very good value for 11e's for a family ticket, very interesting tour and cheap food in their cafe. A lot of the places are free to get into, the natural history museum for example, municipal gallery of modern art, national museum, national gallerytrinity college is free except for seeing the book of kells. You can look for free around the general post office and bank of ireland - sounds obvious but a lot of history there! there is phoenix park (easily got to on the citytour)If you take the city tour you also get discounts on other admission fees.
There are lots of buskers in grafton street, usually the little old man dressed in green - you'll see him. Cross the bridges - thats free!
there are also the usual burger kings, maccys and kfc's to eat but you must try a hot choccy at the butlers hot choccy shops! carrols irish stores are the cheapest place for souvenirs and gifts, there are about seven of them so you will come across them sooner or later!
Anyway, hope you have a good time there is a lot to see and do!!
  • I lived in dublin for 2 years and would suggest avoiding temple bar to eat or drink as it is more expensive. go to temple bar for a nosey though. tgi on grafton street is good and you can normally find discount vouchers on the web. take a look at https://www.dublin.ie and dublintourist.com the dublin tourist site even has a category for visiting dublin on a budget.

also since you are staying in the South Side of Dublin (south side of the Liffey) you will find prices slighter higher than the other side of the Liffey (the north Side) I lived in Dublin 2 just off St Stephens green and loved it. do not panic you will have a fab time. I lived there on a very tight budget and managed easily. get yourself a good map. you will be able to walk everywhere.
