i have been asked to post an item to brittany in france. the item would cost approx £2.50 normally, does anyone know what the additional cost may be?

If it cost around £2.50 to post here then I suspect the item weighs around 700g - if so then airmail to Brittany would be around £4 or just over and surface mail around £3.50.
But check out the Pricing Made Easy leaflet from you post office or pop in and ask the postmaster/mistress, or check out https://www.royalmail.com as they have all the figures online.

also ensure that if paypal's used you charge the extra £4 for AIRSURE, this gives proof of delivery and stops the person filling a non received item claim

On the royal mail website they have a postal calculator so you can work out postage to anywhere in the world as long as you know what it weighs. You can then quote prices for UK, Europe and Rest Of World in your acution details.
