Sent recorded delivery . It got signed for but not by them!

I just want to check what you think as this is a very new one to me. I posted an item to someone(i sent recorded as it was £45 and buyers name was very similar to another ebayer i do not trust although in different parts of country). Anyway he said he had not recieved it so i checked & told him that i have the recorded delivery slip & someone has signed for it & it has been delivered.
What happens now? we double checked address was correct & potman is on holiday who posted it apparently.
I am a bit worried about posting off my proof of postage(recorded delivery slip) in case he says you never posted it at a later date(if he is anything to do with dodgy buyer i suspect) & i will then have no proof as ive sent it to him. But he needs it to claim. What do i do???

First of all if it was worth £45 you should have sent it differently as recorded doesnt cover you for more money it just gets you a signature. The standard cover from Royal Mail is just £28 i think.
DO NOT send off your proof of postage, i dont know why they are asking for that but if something has gone missing then its the responsibility of the sender, not the receiver to claim. If they want anything just to prove to them that you have sent then send them a copy.
Its down to you though to deal with the missing item and to claim back from Royal Mail but as you didnt take extra insurabce you are only going to be able to claim a maximum of £28.
I send my more expensive items by Special Delivery, which is more expensive but i add that onto my p+p charges and explain thats what its for.
    Hope you get things sorted.

The buyer needs to take it up with royal mail. If they want you to send the recorded slip then get a photocopy and send them that you keep the original although i don't know what use this will be to them??!! That sounds a bit dodgy. Royal Mail can only get a signature from someone in the delivery address not even from the next door neighbour. My dad used to work for them so this is how i know that.

I hope yo u do manage to get it sorted but you don't need to refund them or anything like that. Did they pay by paypal? If so them you have a delivery confirmation so they wouldn't win a complaint.

    Cheers,

    Carrie.

The sender is the person with the contract with Royal Mail so they need to check it out.

Also, regardless of what rules there may supposed to be, both at home and at work neighbours sign for each other's recorded letters.

They don't do it like that where I live. Our posties don't care who signs as long as someone does.

I thought that it was the person who sent the item (ie. the seller) who must sort it out with the RM. He/she has the recorded delivery slip (and should not send it to the buyer!)
By all means send a photocopy to the buyer to see if they recognise the signature, but the sender should pursue this with RM straightaway.

Thanks . Right, i know to hang on to that slip now as i wasnt sure. I have only once had a recorded delivery item not arrive and again it was to a dodgy buyer i was wary of to start off with but i cant see how he'll get a refund if someone signed for it.I will take your advice & send photocopy.
  • OP- Take a read of this. You can request a signature request form to find out the name of the person that actually signed for the item. It does cost £2.20 though.

Even if you sent it by recorded delivery when it should have been sent special delivery it still should have got there. If the post office complain about that you should point out that they should have more trustworthy staff and how much more should you bribe them with to look after your parcel? It's like going into a sandwich shop and only having a 50/50 chance of getting food poisoning unless you buy their most expensive range.

If it was me I would say that the item has been signed for and there is nothing I can do to prove he has or hasn't received the item.
