New arrival to UK...possible to get CC?

Hi guys,

Been trawling the forums for a while now looking for an answer. I have just arrived in the UK in Feb 2008 and have been working for the past 4 months now as a contract accountant. I earn a pretty decent salary (£40K per annum)and bank with HSBC. However, I seem to have problems applying for a Credit Card...even trying to get my HSBC Solo Card upgraded to a Maestro seems to be impossible.

I know the banks here are really strict so I was wondering if you guys have any advice/tips for me! It would be much appreciated coz it's been really frustrating trying make online purchases and travel bookings as the Solo Card's not wide accepted.

Thanks!

I banked with HSBC too when I first moved here a few years back, but they still wouldn't give me a card.

The main thing is make sure you are on the electoral roll at your current address. Once that's done, apply for a credit card with Vanquis or Aqua, they're your best chances of getting a card with no credit history.

When you're new, it seems to make absolutely no difference whether your salary is £15,000 or £150,000.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

If you have some cash/savings left aside (about £50,000) you can open a HSBC Premier account and they will (98% of the time) give you a MasterCard immediately. You'll also get a HSBC Premier Maestro Debit Card.

Otherwise try apply for HSBC or sub-prime CC again in 6 months.

Same story here. I arrived in the UK only 9 months ago.

You need to wait 6 months and then after that you can apply for a SOLO card and upgrade your account.

I was give a £200 overdraft as well but no cc because my salary was credited on another account (Halifax) and I didn't have 3 consecutive payslips.
