BT 1-month disconnection charge

I have just cancelled my BT Phone Service a month ago, upon doing so I was told I still had to pay an extra month for my broadband and phone, they even charge an extra £10 + VAT to actually disconnect my service!!

i've been with them for a few years both broadband and phone, so I should be outside my contract.

I strongly object to this action, also since its for disconnection, how do they request payment (obviously now, the pay your bill or we'll disconnect your service, will no longer work!!)

Often when I have moved to a new property i've always had problem setting up the phone line (mainly due to last tenant not paying the phone bill).

i'm just wondering if anyone had similar problems, and wondering what action they would take against me?

P.S, The bill was approx £38, but I don't see why I should pay for a service I am no longer using!!

Many Thanks

Did you give a months notice?

You can't just pull out of an agreement when you decide - what would you think if they were allowed to switch you off at any time without a warning?.

You are never "outside" a contract - I think you mean you were outside any minimum period the contracts had to run.

You still have to serve notice to quit - or pay in lieu of the notice.

I cancelled my service when I needed to, previously when i've asked to be disconnected, its generally done within a week.

I just feel the way BT conduct business and apply their charges, contracts etc ludicrous

I thought the agreement was 12-months service, which I started in April 2006, and cancelled in May 2008 (that was the only print I got!!)

It looks like the bill you have covers a month's notice from 24/5 to 23/6.

They are known to take action on those that don't pay. (Credit history blackmarks, using debt collectors, county court etc)

On £38, I just assume they would give me a denial of service, also since I live in hall of residence, good look in finding me!!!

Your credit rating will be affected and will show and your credit report and that will affect you getting service with any company, as well as other services that will require a credit check.

It would also be passed onto a debt collection agency who will charge an admin fee and track you down.

You took out a contract with a minimum term, you still have to serve notice of disconnection which in this instance is 1 months notice.

I would suggest you grow up, pay your bill and read the terms of service before taking out future services with anyone, because your only end up screwing your financial life up in the future.
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.

I think you might want to re-think that one. Considering the university will have your home address & wouldn't hesitate in passing that on to any debt collection agencies.

As the previous poster said. Grow up & pay what you owe.
