Savings Newbie!

Hi All

I will *hopefully* be debt free this time next year so will then be looking at saving what i used to spend on debt payments.

I have posted about my ISA confusion on the ISA board so wont bore you with that but here is the situation:

I will hopefully be putting around £700 a month away for a maximum of 9 months (from June 2009-March 2010 - when im hoping to get a house). So a maximum of £6500 roughly.

I know there are "limits" on ISAS so i was wondering if you could tell me the best savings account I could use for the "extra" money over the ISA max amount?

I have a normal internet access savings account with my bank (HSBC) but am not sure on the APR etc.

Thanks for all help in advance.

you will need to look nearer the time as interest rates will have changed by then

    but
as much as possible in the ISA currently 3600 but may be higher next year

then look at the various comparison sites (plus weekend newspaper) for the best rates for instant access accounts and for instanst acces regular savers and save in the best one

at the moment you could get 6.51% gross with B&B in an internet instanst access a/c but there may be some slightly higher

agree with Clapton - best to look when you start having the money to save- when researching have a look at sites like moneysupermarket which give comparisons of the various accounts - at the moment there are some accounts giving over 7% but have a look next year

  • Agreed with the replies above.

For the best rates on ISAs take a look at:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/sav...gs-without-tax
    and http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....html?t=401374

For the best rates on instant access savings account, take a look at:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/sav...st#topaccounts
    and http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/saving-...&in_page_id=50

Something to bear in mind in the meantime though:
My top pick is Kaupthing Edge*at 6.5% AER, and guarantees to be at least 0.30% higher than the Bank of England base rate until 1 February 2012, meaning it’ll be a high, if not always top, payer until then. The account is online only and you need £100 to open it.
