Jabs needed for Mexico?

Hi,

We're looking to book up a couple of weeks to Mexico (Cancun/Playa del Carmen, nowhere out of the way or anything). Suddenly thought last night that we may need jabs to go there - can anyone confirm? It's just that we'd be going in September so if we DID need jabs there may not be enough time to get them done.

Thanks.

Speak to the practice nurse at your GPs, you have plenty of time to organise them if any are needed.

    Recommendations are as follows:

none are compulsory, but GP/Nurse prob recommend hepatitus (sp?) typhoid, tetanus booster and poss polio (if records dont state you have had)
'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'
  • I travelled to Cancun and Tulum this April. I had hepatitus booster and typhoid. Malaria tablets are not needed for Cancun.
  • If you're not up to date with your tetanus/diptheria/polio then you'll need a booster (if more than 10 years since last booster)
Recommended is hepatitis A and typhoid. If you get a second hep A booster within 6-12 months of the first vaccine it gives around 20 years protection against hep A. The typhoid vaccine lasts for 3 years.
You should get the vaccines at least 2 weeks before you go (1 month before is better)
    Hope that helps

dont need Tet/Dip/Pol if you have had all your childhood immunisations. D of Health recommend Polio is covered for life, only need tet if you have a "dirty" wound, and its been more than 10yrs since your last one. In fact, you could have a local reaction if you have too many ( red, sore arm)

    Are you a health professional?

I would advise anyone reading this thread to seek current advice from their practice nurse.

Unfortunately last time I needed to check if I needed jabs, I contacted my doctor's surgery and they said I had to contact an external company; when I contacted the external company I was asked to pay to find out!!! which I think is disgraceful

Hence why I've posted on here. I realise it's not exactly ideal, as info on a message board may not be accurate, but I'm reasonably confident that between the responses I'll get the correct information.

Thanks v much for the link - we've already got all the recommended ones looking at that list so looks like we will be ok

Hi, yes I am a Practice Nurse, but I'm not giving any advice that isn;t freely available on the DOH website, or on the Traveldoctor website. I cant understand why you were advised to contact an external company boots, unless you needed specialist advice from School of tropical medicine. I'm sure NHS Direct could have given you some information.
Incidenatally, all these travel vaccinations are only recommended, not compulsary, you wont be turned away at imigration if you dont have them. However, it may affect your insurance policy if you didn't have them, and you became poorly whilst away,

I am going to mexico in August and have an appointment with the travel nurse next month, she advised me the vacinations aren't compulsary but they recommend you have them

I'm not sure if you have to pay for them though.....does anyone else know? x
