I am mortified

I have just gone to my microwave to cook the salmon for tonights salad, last night a spud burst when it was cooking and naughty did not clean it up straight away........I wiped the oven out with a cloth and was horrified at the amount of gunk that came off the sides of the oven, (its a combination micro, and for 2 years it was our only oven, so had some pretty hard wear) the inside is stainless steel, not that you would know it, what do I use to try and get some of that gunk off!!!!!

I cannot use a spray in it because of the grill elements and oven elements plus the fan, but hot soapy water did nothing at all..... I must admit that it is 10 years old, but still works perfectly, at some stage I will have to replace it, but not now........ DWD and if it goes phut I will have to do without for a while.

HELP PLEASE

Put a bowl of hot water in the microwave into which put ..... you've guessed it..vinegar. Kim and Aggie did this on an episode I watched this week - 2/3rds water to 1/3 vinegar. Put on high for 5 mins, then take out and wipe sides out. If it still needs more time, then put bowl back in again and repeat until clean.

Once it's clean, then you can keep it clean and fresh this way or use lemon in your water to fragrance it. I use lemon after I've cooked fish in mine. I also find that if you wipe it out after you've done something that creates a lot of steam,ie rice or pasta, it keeps it in check.

Yep. I regularly wipe mine after doing something that makes a lot of steam. It softens any splatters and makes them very easy to wipe off. It's very rare that I ever have to do anything as drastic as use vinegar or lemon :)

I am afraid it may be past redemption, I have so far had several goes with the vinegar and water, lots of stuff coming off but some of it seems determined to stay on the sides, when it was new I religiously wiped it out, but have got very lax in that department over the years, plus DH uses it to make his porridge and no way will he clean it out...... still slogging on though.... will give it another couple of goes and see what happens, wish I could use fairy power spray it works on BBQ's but doubt if it would do the inside of the micro much good..........LOL

Looks like you'll just have to use a nice big tin of elbow grease. The nice thing is that elbow grease is free :)

What I did when DD nearly set microwave on fire!! Which left brown all over the cream interior!!!

Put a bowl of water with a squeezed lemon and its juice in it and put the microwave on low setting for 15 mins then wipe with warm water.

I did this twice and it worked brilliantly.

I found the lemon juice you get in bottles did the trick when I had a microwave. A bowl of it neat on full for a couple of minutes and a little elbow grease and it would be good as new.

Throw the microwave out and go back to cooking OS ;)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.... especially as I don't have a m/w ... only have an Aga (sigh) so no "hob" or "oven" in the conventional sense either

You can buy microwave and fridge wipes which are excellent for removing the most stubborn of stuff from burnt microwaves.

About 99p in cheapo drug stores.

'Throw the microwave out and go back to cooking OS'

I do cook OS and always have done, it is a convection microwave which means it cooks the same as a fan oven....... but has the advantage of being a microwave......cooks quicker than a conventional oven so saves fuel, when we lived in a cottage in Hampshire it was a choice between a table in the kitchen or a full cooker, the table won..... so I used the convection micro and an electric hot plate with two rings on it. I managed to cook for 6 in this way regularly, just needed to be extra organised. I had used a two tier steamer for quite sometime and it certainly came into its own during the two years we were in the cottage.

I have a gas cooker, I prefer gas hobs......only use the gas oven if I have a lot to cook i.e sunday lunch and pudding, otherwise use the convection oven.

I wish I had an Aga...........

I have given up on cleaning the inside, got most of the muck off, so it will do, but must rememebr to wipe it out each time we use it.

Just keep going at it tootles, the water and lemon/vinegar will eventually work hopefully. Other than that, have you tried making up a paste with baking soda (bi-carbonate of soda) and vinegar? Spread it on, leave for a wee while, then wipe off.
Came back from holiday last year - house looked reasonably tidy being left in the hands of my daughter. Then went to cook..........aaaargh!
Melted cheese everywhere, was sort of glued on to every part of the cooker, microwave, worktops. Took me about 3 days to get rid of it, then I found more! Was a nightmare, amazing the little sweetheart is still alive!
