The one to go for - petrol is fine - is the Mazda Premacy.

Virtually faultless build quality, so reliable for you. Not a great seller, when new, so not lots around, but you'll see they ARE excellent value for £$£$

To get an idea of trim levels & prices do a search in the main dealers 'used' stock on www.mazda.co.uk

I do't see what the problem with French cars is!

We have run Citroens for almost 20 years, apart from a brief and painful encounter with a Ford in the mid-90s. between us, MrsS and I have had 7. We have friends who have had another 9. MrsS has a C3 1.4HDi (new) and I have a 6 year old Berlingo.

The only problem with any of those cars has been our friend's C3 Stop & Start, but she's changing that for another C3 which will be her 3rd, after 2 Saxos. My Berlingo has never given a moment's trouble in 6 years and is the most practical car you could ever wish for. Even the new Which report, (notoriously biased towards Asian cars, but don't get me started) admits that the Berlingo is reliable. And even Clarkson loves 'em.

I am not a 'car person' - it's just transport to me - but I have to admit I wouldn't mind a New Berlingo, the one just launched. But your £6k budget would get you a superb HDi about 2 years old. Just go and test drive one. I reckon they offer better value than the Picasso, which is itself an excellent car.
  • Many thanks - I think I've got a better idea of what to go and have a look at now.

Is there anywhere online I can find out a rough idea of running costs for various different models? I'm guessing a bigger car is going to be a lot more expensive to own than a Polo, so I'd like to find out what the monthly costs are going to be.

    Thanks again
