Speed, car choice and MPG research results
Options
I posted this on another thread, but thought I'd share it more openly on a new thread.
Lot's of people understandably asking do I buy a petrol or diesel car, this car or that car.
Some people saying I get x mpg on this car but not so much on that car.
Problem is there is no simple rule for which car or fuel type is best, so much depends on the driver, the driving conditions and the car itself.
So here is a graph courtesy of Auto Bild magazine which I find interesting, not least because if you want to drive at 100 to 120mph on the German autobahn one of the most fuel efficient cars you can do it in is a petrol, Mercedes C180K (Kompressor - supercharged).
A Zafira diesel is great under 60mph but then gets pretty thristy, Gold GTi TDI is a great all rounder at all speeds, a Prius is OK at 40-50 but consumption escalates rapidly above that.

Especially as a car like that can probably be picked up for about £10.50p on the used car market right now :rotfl:
Friend of mine is driving his father-in-laws W plate SL500, 40,000 on the clock, looks brand new. List price about £72K, he got it for £14K and only drives 6K miles a year so fuel is not really a big issue for him. MPG? don't ask0 -
Exactly. Not exactly the prettiest car in the world but when the engine is ticking over at 2500rpm at 100mph, and you're reclining in your leather seat, who cares?
And it'll still be cruising around 20 years later, when everything else new at the time of purchase will be an orange pile of oxidised metal
