From this summer anyone who goes on the entry to education course will get the EMA regardless of family income,it is getting harder to get a job but you will be in a much better position if you continue your education and sometimes you get a lucky break by meeting poeple while out and about which wont happen if you stay at home,i sympathise though my DS is in the same position but we are very much behind him and eventually hope he gets sorted.Good luck!0

I found this rather offending. If you read my first post i stated my parents do NOT get child benefit. They have not had it since since last august at the latest. And i dont cream off the goverment. Its people who are 'dole dossers' who dont do nothing , wait for there weekly/ every 2 weeks money who i see down my local job center with there cash getting drunk with it! Having a disability is just an excuse. You can do anything when you put your mind to it! I accept the comment about qualifications. But im still young, im sure there is other people who dont know what they want to do in life? And yes i get free dentist treatment because i am under 18. And i will be having as many check ups etc as possible while its free, which im sure others will do. I came on to see if my parents could get anything for food .. etc .. well bills .. and stuff. I didnt think i would but theres nothing else i can do. And if i DID get the 30-40 pounds every two weeks, which as i say, dont think i will. .. i would not get it by sitting here. It would mean me going connexions every 2 weeks, prove im looking for jobs, and when jobs come up or training apply for them etc. Which i am already doing so it would not make no difference. There is plenty of people telling me to get a job, you look for one .. maybe then you will realise its not as easy as you make out. If a blind man with his friend can run marathons on TV surely you can get a job whether your disabled or not. Sitting at home does not help ... for me, you, know one.
I strongly object to you saying that having a disability is"just an excuse"and that you can do anything when you put your mind to it:mad:
10 years ago I had to give up not just a job but a very successful career due to becoming disabled, theres nothing in the world i wouldnt give to be able to work again, but no matter how much of my mind i "put to it" that aint gonna happen anyday soon.
Please if you dont want others to judge you then dont judge others.
sometimes its better to keep quiet and be considered a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it :mad:0 -
I think the OP needs to grow up. John38 is absolutely right -s/he is throwing away a chance of a free education to better themselves because they 'don't get on with it' and they haven't managed to get a job. They are using Connections aka the careers service as their drop in centre.
If life was that bad, you would take any job and there are plenty of them. Hotels, restaurants, fruit/veg picking/packing, factory work...there's plenty to choose from.
I speak from experience...working from 11 years old in a hotel (in the days when you could (!), cash in hand), left/thrown out of home at 15, stayed with Aunt, worked continuously, moved back with parents, they had enormous debts and lost their home, worked to help them, went to uni (had 3 part time jobs), got degree, got full time job and still helped parents.
Yes I probably do sound really harsh, but what prospects does this person have if they can't help themselves?

Hi all i usually lurk then post on MSE as i left a while ago but forgot my username
Anyway, back to on topic. Im 16, 17 in august. And i left school last year. I have a slight disability - how i walk , nothing major. I went college for around 2 weeks last september, didnt like it so i dropped, could not get EMA either. I dropped as college was not for me. Been looking for a job ever since, had no luck though. Both my parents work full time, dad works 5/6 days a week and mum works 3 days a week , not set days (12 hour shifts). Dad gets paid weekly, mum gets paid monthly. My dad has another son, who we do not see and dont intend to i dont think. And CSA are wanting around 110-150 pounds week, cant remember off the top of my head. And my dad earns around 200-220 a week. Mum earns around 400 a month? Not very accurate as i dont know. Anyway. I went connexions today, asked if i could claim money, they said no. I asked if my parents could get child benefit for me as i have read online they can. But the woman said you can claim it ffor upto 20 weeks after leaving school. My parents have not claimed it, is there a chance they could have it back tracked? I am constantly looking for a job, which is getting me down as i spend money which i cant afford going town and filling applications, sending my c.v in to places, and giving my c.v into shops. Its beyond a joke sadly.
My parents cannot afford to keep me either. They keep telling me to get a job, but i cantif it was that simple i would of course. It is coursing arguements at home, between all 3 of us. And my parents are going without, such as clothes which they have had for years.
I dont want to go into to much of my friends life, but a friend of mine her dad went prison last month (accused of touching a girl up). And her mum has a new partner, they both work full time. And now she lives with her sister aged 19 .. her sister works full time. My friend can recieve money when surely her mum should be paying some towards it but im not sure.
I dont want to be on the dole all my life, its just a bit of money would come in handy for food etc. And would course less stress.
Is there anything i can do? I have gone through stuff for money, which my parents dont know about. And i am ashamed off, due to the stress of money problems.
I will be calling the job center tomorrow as i have nothing to lose, neither do i making a thread.
If worse comes to worse, in a few weeks i will find accomidation e.g. a hostel as it would make my life less stressful (parents off my back). It gets me down a lot sadly.
Sorry about the long thread. Basically, is there anything i can claim while i am looking for a job?
thanks
For a start your dad would only be paying £28 per week to the CSA based on his wages, so either he has a lot more coming in than you claim or he has more children not living with him than you claim.
Secondly, you state that college is not for you. Then take any job you can find, if you cannot find paid work, then take a job in a charity shop and you will at least be getting shop experience.
If you are able to work, then I cannot see why you cannot find a job somewhere if you appear keen to work when you go for an interview.LBM £18463.32 in debt 10th June 2008,£12470.99 in debt 10th June 2009.:jTime flies like an arrow.

You also wont be able to claim housing benefit to pay the rent for a hostel, because you're under 18, and not estranged for your parents.
The system is specifically in place to stop people like you creaming off the state. No offence, but I think that if things really were that bad you'd get some qualifications behind you.
I'm your age and on benefits, but for entirely different reasons alltogether.
We already pay far too much tax in this country, and most of that goes on funding the welfare state (not guesswork, but written in the budget).
16 year old, can't be bothered to stay on and get qualifications, can't (or won't) get a job, lives at home, parents pay all the bills and for all the food, and now wants to claim money off the Government.
The tax bill would go through the roof!
Sorry mate, but its a harsh world, and at our age, relying on benefits should be a very last resort.
John38
1. You state that you are the same age as the original poster, then why do you think you deserve to be on benefits and not her?
2. Quote "We already pay far too much tax in this country" - totally agree. However can you honestly include yourself in this statement. Have you ever paid any Tax? You seem to be quick to judge others but the hypocrisy amazes me.
3. You seem to be quite an expert in what you can claim from the system and what you can not. Does this mean that if we were to give you a job title it would be something along the lines of "professional benefit claimant"?If you don't want to get behind our troops, you're quite welcome to stand in front of them.0 -
John believes that he is a tax payer because he pays VAT etc. Ludicrous really.
Point 3 seems to be quite valid.LBM £18463.32 in debt 10th June 2008,£12470.99 in debt 10th June 2009.:jTime flies like an arrow.
