Friends are with Scottish Power and recently were offered a gadget that in fitted onto your meter and tells you how much you are spending over a weekly period, daily etc.

Erm, I dont quite see the point of these things, surely your meter will tell you what you are using wouldnt it?
Then you just work out from that what it would cost you.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
There have been loads of threads about these devices - some are free, other cost up to £80.
If you search for electrisave you will see the threads.
I think you will find that all they do is tell you the instantaneous consumption of the house and hence the cost at that moment. e.g. you are using 1.2kW and at 10p/kWh that is costing you 12p an hour.
There are far better devices for telling you how much the majority of your appliances cost to run over a week etc. e.g. how much your fridge costs to run.0 -
The point of use ones are better ie put in the cost per kwh and you will see the wattage change as the appliance uses up electricity. Mine gives me a total cost as it runs and when the appliance has finished working, the details stay on the screen until I cancel them. The cost/kwh remains in the memory so all you have to do is plug and play
This type of device is imo much more helpful in working out what to use, cut down on etc0 -

Kittie,
This has been covered time and time again.
Nearly all the electrical appliances in a house are on a thermostat, or have variable consumption. Fridge ,freezer, cooker, PC, Washing machine, dryer, oven, microwave, electrical heaters, immersion heater etc etc.
You have no idea how much they cost to run with that device.
Take your fridge/freezer as an example. Assume it has a 200 Watt compressor. Switch it on and most of the time it will use no electricity as the compressor is not running - so using your device it costs nothing to run!
Turn it on when the compressor is running and it will show 2p an hour.
So how much does your fridge/freezer cost to run per year? Nothing or £175?
The answer depends on how long the compressor is running.
My meter tells me I used, say, 10kWh yesterday. Your device would not tell me what had used that power.0
