Problem with Play.com USB Flash Drive

Hi guys,
When I plug the flash drive in, a light flashes on it, but no dialogue box appears to show that My PC (a Dell) recognises its presence. Nor is there an icon, bottom right of the screen, (to allow me the option of safe removal) either.
When I right click on the "Start button", and select "Explore", only local drive C and DVD drive D are listed - no flash drive E.
As a result, I can't access the documents on the flash, nor can I save anything from my desktop to it (when I click "Save As", the E drive is not listed).
Please can you tell me why this is happening and more importantly how I can resolve the problem? Also how can I remove the flash drive safely without having to switch off the PC first?
Any help on this would be most welcome.
Thank you.

Have you tried it in a different USB port?
Has the flash drive ever worked?Charlie0 -
You're the 2nd person to have a problem with a Play.com USB drive in the last day on this forum!
It sounded like the last one was completely stuffed.
I wonder whether Play.com have a dodgy batch?A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
Thanks for the quick reply f1charile!
No I haven't tried a different port. There are two ports on the left hand edge of the monitor, but my other half tried them about a year ago with his old 64mb USB key and declared them not working! I can't try them at the moment, as I imagine I'd have to switch the PC off first.
I've had the flash for about 2 months, but I've only used it a couple of times. At first a dialogue box used to appear (but now it doesn't) and I managed to save a few documents to the flash.0 -
Give it try in all of your ports. As long as the light on the key is not on, you can remove it without a problem.Charlie0

Thanks a lot for the "light off" tip, charlie!
I tried it in the other two ports - nothing! The light doesn't even come on.
When we got the PC, we didn't realise that two of the ports didn't work, as we had no USB drives for ages. Now that its out of guarantee, I wonder if Dell could/would advise (free, on the 'phone!) how we might get 'em working!
On the plus side, I plugged it back in again to the the original port and the dialogue box came on - so its now working OK! Maybe its an intermittent fault. I just hope it keeps on working!
Thanks very much for your help guys.

Yes sometimes my flash drive isn't detected - plug it into another it's OK - plug it into the one it didn't work in before, and it works
The two ports which don't work are the ones on the monitor? I'm assuming you need a USB cable from one of the ports on your computer into the monitor - you have connected that up?Charlie0
