Cost of cat sitting?

We only have the one cat and don't tend to go away for more than a few days at a time but what we did was buy an automatic feeder and a water fountain. The feeder is a dry food type and can feed up to 3 meals a day in controlled portion sizes (this one http://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Bistro-Electronic-Portion-Control-Automatic/dp/B000BVWVUA)
and the water fountain is a CatIt which provides about a weeks worth of flowing water so it doesn't go stale. She does her business outside and is free to come and go as she pleases through the catflap so no need to clear out litter trays.
It cost us a fair bit to buy all the bits and pieces but would be less than paying a cat sitter for 15 days and it's paid for itself over time. We wouldn't leave her completely unattended though, we still pay a neighbour to pop round and make sure everything is OK but because they don't have to do anything it works out much cheaper than a cat sitter.
The feeder itself has been really useful, the fur ball doesn't have to wake us up at 5:30am for her breakfast anymore and if we're late home for any reason we know she hasn't gone hungry.0 -

Oh, if only life were that easyMy cat wakes me at dawn, just to tell me that the sun is up and it is time to play. Sadly, I am not a morning person...

Oh she still plays as soon as the suns up, she's just more than happy to entertain herself thankfully. She has a basket of toys kept in a corner that she dips into whenever she likes and she's even learned to put some of them away when she's finished! lol She's tidier than we are! It's particularly cute when she brings her 3 mice (which she seems to think are kittens) through to the bedroom at night, dumps them by my side of the bed and waltzes off with an expression that says "your turn to look after the kids now, I'm off for some peace and quiet and an undisturbed snooze". :rotfl:0 -
have you got a neighbour with an older child approx 10+ that you would trust?
one of our neighbours daughters cat sat for us a while ago, we trust teh family completely, and dad used to come over with her initialy to make sure everything was ok etc... Then we paid her £30 for the week, we got a bargain, she loves animals and got pocket money so she was really happy as well.
Just an idea?0
