What feedback would you leave?

I bought a book last Wed and it arrived today, the listing had a picture of the front cover and was described as "in good condition". In fact, this was the only text on the listing. It eventually arrived today (I know, sellers have seven days to post, but when I sell I usually post next day unless it's not possible), and it smells all fousty and the pages are yellowed. The book itself is fine (no pages missing), but I wouldn't sell it myself. I don't like leaving neutrals, and I don't know if its too harsh to give one in this case.

i would give the seller a chance to rectify the situation first before thinking about leaving feedback

Did you pay much for the book? Maybe you could ask for a partial refund.

I would not leave bad feedback. The postage is a pain but within the rules so would be unfair just because you usually post the next day. Also they probably stated good condition as the pages were all okay ie not missing or ripped.Although this seller does not meet your own selling standards it sounds like they did not deliberately set out to deceive

    As pinkgem says!

Feedback should be based on your total experience of the transaction not initial impressions.

You may not feel too pleased at present as the book was not exactly what you were expecting, but if the seller immediately offers a full refund once the book is returned would it still be an issue?

I would email them to let them know and depending on the outcome, I would post appropriate feedback. If that means a Neutral, then so be it. I would also mark down the DSR on dispatch time

Depends what you bought the book for really. If it was just for personal use / to read etc. then leaving less than positive just because the pages are yellowed and it smells 'fousty' seems a bit harsh to me. That's just what happens to books when they get old ... if you want shiny new books then you shouldn't even be buying second hand.

If you bought it as a collector's piece or to re-sell, that's another matter - but in that circumstance it's really your own responsibility to check any specific queries about the condition before you purchase, especially if the description is a little sparse.

Again, if the seller posted within the allotted time then I don't know what the problem really is - and you can't expect everyone to do things exactly the way you do / sell only the things you would sell. They have different lives to live!

Personally, I certainly wouldn't count yellowed pages as a serious flaw - torn/missing pages, heavily creased cover / pen or pencil marks or notes, yes. Signs of aging, no.

Contact them first, too see if they will refund etc before leaving feedback.

Its is only fair to give them a chance to sort it out, far too many buyers trigger happy with the neg feedback button lately.

Consider, on Amazon, the different book conditions you can select for the book you're selling.

    New
    Used (Like New)
    Used (Very Good)
    Used (Good)
    Used (Acceptable)

Good is quite far down the list. If you ask me it's not an adjective that would fill me with confidence.

If I was selling a book on Amazon and I picked (Used) Good, it would be generally tidy, clean, but not necessarily fragrant, pages not splayed out, a bit of dogearing perhaps, scratches or light wear to the cover, no more than tiny tears to the cover.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • I'll leave a positive, but mark the seller down on dispatch time and description. It didn't cost a lot, so I don't think a partial refund would be appropriate.
