Can anyone tell me the best and cheapest way to buy train tickets on line for travel in Italy. The trenitalia booking online service appears to be down at the moment.

Please make sure that you stamp your ticket in the machine on the station, we did not know about it and the very nice inspector on the train let us off, but could have charged us 20 euros each!

Trenitalia say they cannot take any credit cards other than Italian ones. I spoke to three staff, they all said the same thing, though they gave no reason for this odd state of affairs.

Rail Europe, however, were brilliant. The rail fares seemed to be the same price as direct from Trenitalia, yet you get very helpful staff and you can check availability and buy tickets for the whole journey through them (eg Eurotunnel, SNCF, Trenitalia etc).

Thanks Biggles for your info, unfortunately I have left it too late to book with raileurope as the station I want to leave from does not allow me to pick up tickets from there. Looks like I will have to just buy the tickets when I get there.
