Are there any compatability issues, as the Virgin box presumably overrides the TV's own channels.... or does it?

No compatibility issues..
As long as you have an arial as well as your virgin box connected to your TV you can choose either to watch your Freeview, OR your cable channels.
Although I didnt think there was anything on freeview that cable dont send out anyway?“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Don't think Virgin carry Sky Sports news, may be wrong though, they don't carry Sky One since !!!!!! Branson fell out with the Murdochs

Not quite true.
Virgin box will connect via scart, but it is a simple press of a button to ask your tv to look at any other input, your dvd for instance, or your "freeview tuner, or your games console.
Otherwise WHY would you have several inputs
