Did it include monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers? Did it include a genuine copy of Windows?

To be honest i don't think it was very good value as the parts are all really old. I presume a lot of the parts are second hand as well given their age.

Have a look at what you could have got for £200 here

Well the XP if genuine is prolly worth £50 ish, more if it's retail rather than OEM, and more still if it's Pro rather than Home, as Bill says all of the components are about 4 years old. which is a long time in techworld. Here's a review of the processor, note the date at the top.

For the box HW itself, you could pick up similar items for about £30 or less. Sorry!

[free - denotes where it's not really saleable anymore or people just don't buy them due to age]

    AMD Athlon XP 1800+ = £3/free.
    MMX, 3D NOW 1.5GHZ 1800 ram = £? 5
    350 MB Hard Drive, 350MB or GB?...MB= £FREE, GB= £20
    Nvidia Geforce MX 440 with Agp 8 x 64 MB =£6
realtek ac 97 £Included in motherboard

Box itself, if its a used beige one then probably about £4 or free, I can't give them away sometimes.

To put it in perspective, I recently sold a friend the following:
    Logitech speakers (new)
    New Laser mouse
    New USB keyboard
Used (good condition) Hansol 15" TFT
    Standard used beige box
    1GB RAM (memory)
    80GB hard drive
    8 USB ports
    DVD-Reader
CD + DVD RW [so thats two optical drives in total]
    Genuine windows XP Pro
    AC'97 OnBoard sound
    64Mb Voodoo 3D Graphics card

    £90

At least you got a genuine copy of XP. Those old AMD XP processors were very good in their day. If you just want a basic machine for email and surfing etc. it should be fine but I think you could have done better elsewhere, sorry.

He's not a very good friend tbh. I'd be going back and asking for at least half pref 3/4 of your money back. These are probably old parts he's had knocking around for years as you can't buy some of them new anymore.

Perhaps the friend will give a bit of after sales service if needed unlike the box-shifters. I once bought a similar item from a backstreet operator and the service was the most valuable item.
