Gloss Worktop Mistake!

Hi All
I’ve just has my brand new kitchen installed… Unfortunately I made the mistake of not speaking to my fitter before buying. So when it came to fitting the black gloss worktop he said I’d made a big mistake and said I should have got for something that wasn’t gloss as these scratch and mark so easily.
Oh well it’s in now. My question is: can I get some sort of covering or something that will protect the worktop from scratching. I’ve seen someone use a number of glass type placement mat type things dotted around the kitchen. It’s one thing for the wife and I to be careful, but as we have a big family constantly visiting it’s difficult. What are my options..
Regards
Jag

We have black gloss and its not TOO much of a problem.

You need to use a chopping board,( but then I would never use a knife directly on any work top) and be carefull of ceramic pots with unglased bottoms (slow cooker pot).

Our has been it 6 months now and has no real noticable damage.

    Our main complaint is watermarks!

You have to wipe the surface down with a wet cloth as normal, but then you have to POLISH it with a microfiber cloth to make it look shiny again..

I have two elderly neighbours with black gloss worktops. When we were choosing our new kitchen we visited several neighbours to see what they'd done with the space. Both warned us off gloss. One has a ring that won't come out from a neighbour leaving them a plant whilst on holiday and over watering it so it was constantly sitting in water. The other has a mark from her electric kettle where it has dulled the service simply from heating up and cooling down repeatedly (she lives on strong tea).

I think with metal trivets and glass worktop savers you can stop cuts and melts but be careful of leaving things in the same position! shadypants5 has also discovered the main disadvantage - black gloss always looks mucky! If it's not watermarks it's dust apparently and one of my neighbours tries to avoid putting stuff down the sink in case it splashes.

We went for a black Axiom honed worktop rather than gloss in a previous house but it still looked dusty. Going for grey solid surface this time. Dust blends in :rotfl:

I think Homebase have this on special offer... :)

Many thanks for the help. I guess I'll just have to be extra careful and possibly look into glass worktop savers
