01 numbers with non-standard charging

Following on from the discussion of Channel Islands numbers being chargeable.


I looked at the NTL tariff guide, and found the following numbers that are chargeable, I had no idea that an 01 or 02 number could be 'premium'.

The following area codes cost 43p (per call I think)

014261 014262 015231 015234 015237


The following area code is dearer than normal: (4p/min daytime)

01399

The following area codes are very dear: (8p/min daytime)

014264 014265 014268 014269 014591 014592 014594 014595 014596 015233 015235 015236 015238 015239 018930 018932 018933 018934 018935 018936 018937 018938 018939



Anyone any idea why these 01 codes are treated differently to other 01 area codes?

They seem to be paging numbers. I recall that some pagers cost a fixed amount per call, others charged you for a minute or two to speak with an operator who would send the message.

All a bit passé now.

oh right, I have never used pagers, so I take it pagers had an 01 prefix then?

Like you say not that relevant these days.
