BT Deposit

hi

i needed some advice on how to deal with BT

i moved into a rental house in April and rang BT to get the working line changed to my name. they did it with a deposit of £ 50 for setting up my accont as i never had a BT line in my name.

after 2 days i found out that they were going to charge £125- for you know what. they disconnected the line and told me an engineer needs to come down to get it installed blah blah blah.......... i just told them - i dont need any BT line at my house and cancelled my whole order.

the £ 50 deposit was taken out on the 4th April when i made the first phone call to them, as after asking it back on numerous occasions, it had not been put back into my Credit Card account. every time i call them, they say it will be done with in the next 7 working days.
i have spend a long time trying to explain this to the customer service people whenever i ring them and i'm always assured that it's going to happen in the next 7 working days. Is there anything i can do to get the deposit back. i have even thought of sending a threatening letter about the time they have made me waste on the phone plus the interest of my £ 50 from april. i had rang them atleast 5 times in the past 8 weeks and have got all the names of people i sopke to and the time when i sopke to them

Pls advice -what can i do

Escalate as a BT Complaint, alternatively look into the possibility of suing your CC.
  • Write to (don't bother phoning) BT giving them seven days to refund you.

If you don't see the credit on your card after 7 days, no need to sue the credit card company - ring them up to initiate a "charge-back". If all goes well you'll get refunded immediately, or, you might be sent a paper form to outline the particulars.

Then the card company can chase BT. If they don't get an answer, the most probable result will be that you'll get your £50 back anyway.

same here - I took out a new contract in May, and consequently changed provider... anyways, phoned them up for my £50, and they were adamant that they had to hold it for 6 months. I have a note in my diary for 21st Nov (the date they told me my money would be available) as it was impossible that they could refund it before then...arrggghh!

BT are conmen! I paid the £50 deposit and was told i would get it back after 12 months - it was due last October and i still haven't received it, i've spent numerous hours on the phone, i wrote to 6 different addresses, threatened them with courts, papers etc, nothing. How many more people have been conned like this.

Has anyone spoke to ofcom or trading standards.

reds-on-sea - i dont think you should settle for this unless you are still with bt for line rental, they shouldnt hold deposits for non customers, as its more of a security for them.
