Credit Card Company took cash from my bank acc't to cover missed payment!?! Can they

I'm to posting so bear with me. Have got a Lloyds TSB Credit Card and Lloyds TSB Current acct and Savings acct. Could not send in full payment this month so sent a "good will gesture". Today have received a letter saying this month's payment was not received plus also discovered today that they have "helped themselves to money" in my savings account to cover the amount I didn't send them. I have never heard of this happening before. We have queried it with the bank and they say its OK because it is in the "small print". Can anyone advise if they do this or if anyone has had any experience of this?? Bewildered somewhat.......
