Nationwide Account

after much reading about the best ways to take your money abroad I decided the Flex account which doesn't charge when abroad was the best way forward. That was until I went to apply for the current account, the information that was presented to me read;

In order to open a current account with Nationwide you must select one of the following options:
I will credit my account with £100 when I receive my card.

I will use my Nationwide Current Account as my main account, and transfer my regular payments and credits from my existing bank account*.

I will open an e-Savings, e-Bond or Monthly Income 60+ account when I receive my card.

I am aged 16 or 17.

*This can be done as part of the account opening process and you will need your bank/building society name, account number and sort code.
The application will take about 10 minutes to complete. You will need:
  • your employer's name and address
  • your income details
Depositing 100GBP is no problem at all but its the other requests which I'm curious about......

Can/will I be forced to use this new account as my main account, will I be able to apply without giving details of my other accounts.

E-savings, E-bonds, pension scemes, Will these cost me, do I have to use them or can they be left dormant.

I'm basically just looking to use this account for when I travel and nothing else...

Cheers in Advance

*EDIT*

Being very very tired I did not read the application properly, I just need to select one of those options...

Apologies

Read it again you only have to do one of these things so deposit the £100 as you said you can do and no the e accounts do not cost anything to open they just have to have a minimum balance

while we are on Nationwide, can I pop a question
I have a basic Cash Card Account - maybe because I didn't want it to be my main bank.
The question is: will I be still able to use the card abroad free of charge? It is only a cash card not a debit card.
    thanks

The e-savings is quite useful as a temporary staging-post for cash while you amass the amount you want to pay a lump sum into a regular saver or ISA. If you use Nationwide's online banking it's a doddle to transfer money to and from the esavings and the flexaccount. We find them really handy. Bear in mind also with Nationwide being a Building Society still, you don;t have some of the benefits you take for granted with a bank - for example you're limited with the number of bags of coins you can pay in per day, oh, and they will also ask that you sign away any rights to any windfall arising from any future change in their circumstances.

  • hi, i can help you out a lot here. I've got the flex account and you can use it abroad in cash machines and shops etc with the chip and pin without being charged commission. How long are you going to be abroad for?

I've been in sweden for the past 12 months, going home next wednesday.
They like to send new cards out regularly and then cancel the one you have in your pocket without telling you. Of course, whilst you're abroad, you don't actually get your post, and hence your card. So i've been left without money for the past 3 weeks. This is the second time they've sent me a new card and cancelled the one i have without notifying me or warning me via means of email, which is how i specified i would like to be contacted by them. My first card expires in october 2008 and yet they send me a new card in december 2007? then this card expires in 2010 and they send me a new card at the end of may??
and yes, i've told them 4 times already that i'll be in sweden for a year. I thought having a nationwide account will save me trouble of opening a temporary account here.

So i guess for short term trips abroad then the Flexaccount is good. Just hope you don't win their "lets send out random replacement debit cards lottery"

Nationwide have been changing their cards due to security measures. I've received 3 debit cards in 3 months for no reason.

And they've sent me the calculator thing as well, which is irritating to use
  • A few points:

    1) They have introduced the application changes to the flex to stop people only using it for free cash abroad....... that isn't a cost effective account for them!

    2) The new calculator thing is irritating???? I'd say the fact that it pretty much takes away the worry of fraud is a pretty small price to pay!!!
