Help!! New Hardrive Prob

Just fitted new 2nd drive, western digital 250.Formatted & Partitioned using WD software.When copying old drive using WD software,comp.re-boots after appro 3.4gig.,don't know why.When trying to copy manually,get message,
Cannot copy NTUSER there has been a sharing violation.How can i get over this or copy the old drive. Thanks

    Try to format it through XP.

    Go into START>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT then double click on STORAGE and then DISK MANAGEMENT. Right click on the drive and select format.

    It's the same in 2000.

    You need to use something like Norton Ghost Partition Magic or similar to transfer the system from one drive to the other. Windows won't let you copy some of the system files when it's in running

    Thanks blinky, I'm sure that it is partitioned & formatted ok. in the software there is a section which does allow you to copy original disc but in my case it keeps re-booting the comp. at different stages.

    I'm sure there's some freeware Partition copying software but I can't think of one of the top of my head.

    PC Pro has a couple of utilities on the Cover DVD this month which will be useful for you.

    Get Hiren's BootCD, details of contents here : http://62.253.162.19/hiren.thanki/bootcd.html

    Download from Isohunt.com or mininova.org

    Burn ISO with nero or other ISO burning software

    Install both drives (As im sure your already have)

    Set your BIOS to boot from CD (Del or F2 during boot, set boot order)

    With BootCD inserted you will have an option to Start windows or start bootCD, Start bootCD

    Select drive image tools
    Select Norton Ghost
    Select Non USB/ZIP DRIVE
    Select, Loacl
    Select DISC to DISC
    Select source disc (smaller one)
    Select Destionation disc (Your new one)
    Wait about 20 mins until copy finished, switch off, remove smaller drive, remove CD, and your done.
