carpet cleaning - professional or DIY?

Hi all MSEers!

Having moved into a new house a few months ago i'd like to give the carpets a clean - no big stains, just generally grubby.

Can anyone advise as to whether they have had carpets professionally cleaned or used the rug doctor and their experiances?

It's not something i want to do too often so don't mind paying a bit more if it stays cleaner longer (i've seen on other threads that DIY washing makes it prone to geting dirtier quicker!)

    Xmas Saver!
Go with a rug doctor, and only buy a small tun of detergent. Stardrops works well apparantly.

USed them loads, always good results.

When I moved house just over a year ago I got quotes for cleaning the carpets, around £300. So for about £35 I hired my own carpet cleaner and did it myself. The results were really, really good and the landlady was convinced I'd paid a pro to do it.

I can't comment on how the carpets lasted after that as I moved home but I never heard anything negative back...........

I am not sure if a DIY/rental machine will give as good results as a pro job. when we left our rented house, the letting agency gave us the no. of a local carpet cleaner, he steam cleaned the carpets of the whole empty (4 bed) house for £70. he has since done the carpets in our new house and they do stay clean for ages whereas chemical carpet cleaner seems to leave a residue which attracts dirt. having said that I have 2 mucky kids and light coloured carpets so I need him to pay a return visit!
