One of my dogs suffers from epilepsy and he's been controlled with phenobarbitone for 2 years now.My vet currently supplies me with a generic human brand of phenobarbitone which is very very cheap. However, at my last vet appointment he informed me he can no longer supply me with the cheaper generic brand. This is due to some obscure European law which states only drugs branded for animal use must be used.Because of this my monthly bill will increase by 500%.
This is called the cascade system, not an obscure european law, but a well known one in veterinary terms. It dictates that a vet must supply an 'animal use' licensed version of a generic drug above any others where availiable.
Epiphen is the brand name for the only animal licenced version of phenobarbitone on the market.
There are severe penalties for non compliance with this rule if caught, I suspect your vet has decided he needs to play it safe - there's a lot of hoo ha in the veterinary press about this type of thing at the moment.
There is light at the end of the tunnel though - when a company first licences a drug for veterinary use, they have have sole rights to produce it for a number of years, after wich, other companies can produce their versions - in a highly competitive narket, which means a flood of cheaper alternatives usually appears - Epiphen has been marketed for about 10 years now, so there must be a new one on the horizon soonThis year, I will mainly be kicking some serious money saving butt!0 -

And a link for Epiphen HERE Single 30mg tablets are 8p, 60mg are 16p. I don't know how that compares.
My dog is on Synoquin. It would cost me over £60 at my vets. It costs me £21 with free P&P from the site I've linked to above.
They are called Bestpet Pharmacy and they're extremely helpful and efficient.
some info - Synoquin (and the other brand, cosequin) are branded as 'neutraceutcals' (posh name for supplement). Pop into your local healthfood store and pick up a bottle of glucosamine sulphate - this is the generic form of the above brands. - as long as the millgrams (mg) per capsule matches the mg on the health food store bottle, you can continue with the advised dose rate. This year, I will mainly be kicking some serious money saving butt!0 -
last 2 lots of frontline we got for our cat were via ebay - loads of international sellers. is exactly the same as u get here but much cheaper. friend recommended it as has been doing it for ages & not had any problems yet.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0
