I don't know if you are all aware of
https://www.vet-medic.com
but they supply animal medication at a much lower rate than your vet.
Some medications will require a prescription from your vet but even with paying for the prescription, the medication still (usually) works out a lot cheaper than the vet. They also do worming tablets etc at a much lower cost with free p&p on most things too.
If your animal is on long term medication make sure your vet gives you a 6 month prescription as I believe this is legally allowed.
If you phone vetmedic when you have your prescription they will take the details give you a reference number which you then write at the top of the prescription, send it to them and normally two days later your pet's medication arrives in the post.
Go on save yourself some money and show the vet that they can't keep ripping us off.
E.g. My dog was on prednisolone (long term). I cut the price by half with vetmedic and that was after paying for the prescription too.

Thanks for this link but it isn't any use for me. My dog has Stronghold flea treatment but they only seem to do Bob Martin's.0

Can anyone help.
One of my dogs suffers from epilepsy and he's been controlled with phenobarbitone for 2 years now.My vet currently supplies me with a generic human brand of phenobarbitone which is very very cheap. However, at my last vet appointment he informed me he can no longer supply me with the cheaper generic brand. This is due to some obscure European law which states only drugs branded for animal use must be used.Because of this my monthly bill will increase by 500%.
Now in my case the only brand of phenobarbitone for animal is a brand called Epiphen who have a completely monopoly .Surely this is against people having a choice and against competition law.
I can only suspect this is the case as the human generic drug does not included an information leaflet for animals.
Anyone else had any experience of this??2011 Wins - Dave Gorman Tickets :j Sony Bravia TV :beer:0 -
How many of these tablets do you need and how much do you normally pay?I haven't got one!0

Lara - there is stronghold flea treatment HERE
And a link for Epiphen HERE Single 30mg tablets are 8p, 60mg are 16p. I don't know how that compares.
My dog is on Synoquin. It would cost me over £60 at my vets. It costs me £21 with free P&P from the site I've linked to above.
They are called Bestpet Pharmacy and they're extremely helpful and efficient.0 -

I've used these guys for Frontline. They may be based in Australia but they only took a week to deliver and much cheaper than the vet.

Hi cheekymole,
at the moment my dogs is on 75mg(1 x 60 + 0.5 x 30 mg tab) a day. It's costs me around £4.50 per month, this will increase to just over £20 per month, but my fab vet provides these at cost price-I'm too good as customer, I have 6 border collies.2011 Wins - Dave Gorman Tickets :j Sony Bravia TV :beer:0 -

My dog has been epileptic since she was 6 months - she's now 3. My previous Cavalier was also epileptic but not until she was 8. It doesn't run in the breed.
My little dog is on phenobarbitone as well (30mg x 2 day) but they are for dogs. The cost from our Vet is 4p each I think - shall have to check!. You do pay a dispensing charge of about £3.50 but as we have a prescription for 6 months at a time that isn't bad. Also she is insured. Blood tests are the most expensive but unfortunately so necessary and we have these done every six months. I would check the price out with another vet (just call and ask their price, you don't have to give your name) because the price you are quoting is not far from the price I pay for 6 months worth!
I belong to the Canine Epilepsy - they give loads of help and advice and have been asking members to let them know the cost of the phenobabitone because some members seem to be paying huge sums.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. If he/she is controlled with the pheno I wouldn't change it myself. HTH0 -
Thanks Binxy for pointing Stronghold out to me.
I pay £16 for the 120mg dosage so only a few pence difference. Looks like I've got a good vet & it's a Veterinary Hospital:).0 -

Your vet is right. Vets have to use licenced drugs on animals if there are any available. Generic drugs can only be used if there is no licenced alternative. Doctors are encouraged in the NHS to use generic drugs but vets are told to do the exact opposite. It all boils down to residues in meat and other animal products. The EU doesn't diferentiate between farm animals and pets when it comes to this law.0
