Hi guys!:hello:
Morning to all - I hope everyone's in fine fettle?
Morning to all - I hope everyone's in fine fettle?
I'm in desperate need of some kind soul to translate into Tiff,, how to share 1 printer between 2 computers in the same room please?
The computer already linked to the Epson DX5000 printer is running Vista Basic Home.
The second 'new' computer has Epson 800 printer loaded, (which would be great if I had one!), is running XP Professional Home
Also, I can't see any additional ports/holes (see what I mean about translating into Tiff?!) actually on the Epson DX5000 printer, for another cable to link them. I don't even know if, or what, cable needs to be used. I did try following the help guide last night but to no use.
The reason for all this is that the XP has got Photoshop loaded on it already and I have a whole load of genealogy photos to put through it. DS has also just got photos from Sunday's College Prom night loaded onto Vista pc.
I need the XP pc for myself so that I don't interrupt DS who has his own docs, music, photos etc on the Vista pc.

Can anyone walk me through it simply please, if it's possible?
Many thanks in advance for your time and patience.
Much Love,
Tiff xxx

You'll need to have both pcs in the same network 'workgroup' - rightclick My Computer and open Properties to check/amend under the Computer Name tab.
The printer has to have 'Sharing' enabled on the pc it's physically attached to - find it in the start menu under Settings > Printer and Fax then rightclicky on it to get Properties again. Give it a Share Name that's straightforward.
Nowww.. go to the pc you want to connect to this printer, go to 'Add Printer' in the printers window, and select 'Network Printer' option.
You can either browse the home network to select the newly-shared printer, or type in the address, which will be \\'workgroup name here'\'other pc name here'\'printer share name here'
The pc will then copy the driver files from the other computer, allowing you to use the printer normally via yours.
NB: I don't/won't use Vista, so hopefully this bit will apply to both systems!IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer0 -
Hi rdpro!
Many thanks for your reply which I'm just trying to work through now angel - I appreciate your help.:T :A
I have a couple of questions if that's all right with you hun?
The printer is attached to Vista pc.
You'll need to have both pcs in the same network 'workgroup' - rightclick My Computer and open Properties to check/amend under the Computer Name tab.
On the Vista, I have Computer which properties gave me computer name, full computer name and workgroup. So far so good - I think!

Got into printer - properties and the name of the printer is the full brand name. There is no location listed.
I then went into - sharing on Vista.
The share name is also the full brand name of the printer.
Can I change the share name to something simpler angel, or does it have to stay as the name of the printer?
I'll leave it at this part for now rdpro and await a reply. The only other question is the address part on the XP and which names I have to put in and in which order, i.e. Vista\XP.
Sorry - I hope you don't mind me asking hun - many thanks.

As long as the workgroup field says the same on both pcs, i.e., 'mshome', 'workgroup', homenetwork' or anything really, then they are both capable of using microsoft's built-in protocol called File and Print Sharing - basically, they are allowed to share a common resource, in this case your printer
The printer properties won't show the location when viewed on the pc it's physically connected to - you'll only see that bit when you browse the workgroup network from the non-attached pc.
Yup, you can change the name to anything you like - do it under the 'Sharing' tab of the printer properties, like this:
