Claiming lost luggage from Continental Airlines

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to proceed with this horrible companies 'customer service' that they're giving me!

I went to Newark, USA in 2006. I was transferred to a Continental Airlines flight in Chicago for a connection even though these weren't the company I paid for. Needless to say they lost the luggage and I filed a form with them whilst in the US and went home.

18 months later I finally start getting somewhere with them, as apparently I was using a dodgy email address to contact them and I'd given up a while ago until I remembered this week.

The adviser via email is really snobby and ignorant and is trying to tell me to get lost in a professional manner. She claims I need to send me baggage numbers and stuff to her, but I sent them when I was in the US even though she's adamant the company never got them. At the moment she's telling me that I'm the one who has to do this and that, when none of this would have happened if their company was decent. Apparently this happens a lot from reading online with people's luggage from Chicago to Newark. Am I screwed out of getting my long due compensation because of their bad service or do I have to be that bit more adamant to her and get it elevated to someone else?
