GP referral letter

Sorry if this sound really stupid!

Two weeks ago I asked my doctor to refer me to the hospital. Today I got a call from the doctors surgery saying that my referral letter is available for me to collect and that I was not going to be charged for the letter. So I collected the letter and I don't know what I have it for! Do I post it to the hospital? My doctors will not put anything in the post as it is 'too expensive' so this is possible or is it just a copy for my reference? I stupidly did not ask the receptionist when I collected it as I assumed the information would be in the letter.

When I had a private referral my GP wrote me the letter which I then had to pick up from the surgery. I booked the consultant's appointment by calling the hospital and then just took the letter along with me and handed it to the doctor when I saw him.

I assume this is private then because you take the letter along to the consultant. If it's NHS, the doctor writes directly to the hospital.

Most GP's now fax referrals to the hospital Consultant,so this seems very bizarre to me.
