GP referral letter

Sorry if this sound really stupid!
Two weeks ago I asked my doctor to refer me to the hospital. Today I got a call from the doctors surgery saying that my referral letter is available for me to collect and that I was not going to be charged for the letter. So I collected the letter and I don't know what I have it for! Do I post it to the hospital? My doctors will not put anything in the post as it is 'too expensive' so this is possible or is it just a copy for my reference? I stupidly did not ask the receptionist when I collected it as I assumed the information would be in the letter.

Is this a private referral?
are you sure? that sounds very bizarre! never heard of it before and I know atleast 50 GPs.Do I post it to the hospital? My doctors will not put anything in the post as it is 'too expensive'0 -
When I had a private referral my GP wrote me the letter which I then had to pick up from the surgery. I booked the consultant's appointment by calling the hospital and then just took the letter along with me and handed it to the doctor when I saw him.0

I assume this is private then because you take the letter along to the consultant. If it's NHS, the doctor writes directly to the hospital.0 -
Most GP's now fax referrals to the hospital Consultant,so this seems very bizarre to me.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0
