My desk top is playing up so I have decided to use my laptop to for the internet. There is some stuff on my desktop I would like on my laptop.....music, some pics, a file or two....I know ( or at least I think I know ) that this can be done with a flash memory stick / pen drive ??? I have a number of questions regarding the transfer of data via this method...
Once the info has been transferred can I delete and add more data ?
What size memory should I ideally get ? I have about 300 songs...that need transferring...
What would you recommend in the way of a memory/ pen drive ?
Oh yes ...is it easy to do ???
many thanks

has your desktop got a lan connector and has the laptop ??
if so you can get a CAT5 crossover cable for about £5 and copy them over direct by "sharing" the drive over a network...windows more or less sets it up for you
I take it the desktop does not have a cdrw drive ?Ex forum ambassador

Or open up both PCs, put the old hard drive into the new machine, connect the ribbon and copy whatever you want.illegitimi non carborundum0

Lan connector ? I was using USB to connect to the net on the desk top and ethernet on the laptop.
The desk top does have a cdrw drive. That method seems awful long winded ( well to me it does ) I was looking to transfer it all quickly......Things to do today :

cheaper and easier ......
flash drive of 256mb will set you back around £15 and won't hold all the songs in one go, and they have a quite slow transfer rate
have you got a network set up already if I remember ??Ex forum ambassador

No network set up.....given the space I inhabit there isn't a need. So you are saying that the flash memory method is not a good idea ? Your other suggestions ( to me ) require a bit of techinical know how ....of which I have none ! I am looking for the easiest (pref limited tech knowledge ) method.Things to do today :

1 x cdrw disk.....easy and simple
unless you have the use for a usb flash drive in the future
if the old pc is win98 (not win98se) or win 95 you will have problems getting one to work on it at all
i though you had another thread where you were sharing broadband on both machines ?Ex forum ambassador

If its xp on at least one of the machines, see if the files and settings transfer wizard can manage what you want.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
