Post office credit card

Hi there,

I just wanted to tell you about the fact that the Post office credit card has a minimum earning criteria which is not made clear on their website or in their leaflet. It is only made clear when you phone the freephone number to speak to an advisor. I applied online yesterday and was told I would get a decision in 5 days, now I know that I will be turned down as there is a £8000 earning limit. If I'd known this I wouldn't have applied and wasted a credit check! When I spoke to a CS advisor I was told that they had had many complaints today about that fact and that it was something they were looking to correct!!

Very few (if indeed any) cards have income limits of less than £8000 and these are frequently not shown in any of the published terms and conditions it is simply part of the credit scoring which is treated as confidential. Some of the gold and platinum type cards do state income limits but to be perfectly honest I think these are very low and are just marketing ploys (how can a card that is available to people on less than the mean or even median income be called "exclusive"?). Perhaps since it is a post office product and as such will be on display to many people who have limited income they should be explicit but it can't be that much of a surprise surely?
  • It was a surprise to me actually because I earn under £8000 but managed to get a Halifax one card, and the Tesco card has a minimum earning requirement of £5000. I know that's only a tiny fraction of them and I agree I am probably very naive. I still think that they should at least mention the amount you are required to earn on their promotional leaflets.

not surprise with that from POL, like with homephone they saying they are one of the cheapest but know that is not quite true in line rental or call charges. And as Ruyareece said quite a few cards allow one to open for less than £8000, my wife open one which supports the dog trust, and open it. OK granted it only gave £500 credit limit but for her needs it was acceptable... But I do see how lke other ppl saying quite a few do not put the min salary required hence they could slip by. But most do from my knowledge, ie nationwide, Lloyds, etc.
  • Well my application got denied (obviously) but thankfully they didn't credit check me anyway cos I didn't meet the criteria - phew!!
