Strikes me you don't have enough knowledge about computer design to make a proper judgement here, so you're erring on the side of caution. I won't stop you. Like you say, it's only 40 quid.
Next thing, you'll be saying that fender should only fit his new PSU when there's a full moon.

Chris, a quick look suggests that the XP 1900 used about 68 watts, the 4600 possibly uses either 65ish or 90 watts depending on the revision of the chip (the latest EE versions are 65 watts), so at best it's about the same wattage, at worst it's nearly 40% more on the CPU - and with a 300watt PSU you probably don't have much head room (especially if the PSU is/was a fairly cheap* one, or ageing).
*I know some PSU's overstate what they can reliable provide by quite a margin, something that can be fine under one configuration, but be problematic on other similar setups.0
