There are other, less addictive video games out there. WoW has a horrid track-record of, and a certain taboo regarding, an underbelly of clinically addicted players. The game, as far as I can tell (I'm an outsider, never played it, but I'm in the MMO scene), now dominated by players who use external companies to level up their characters for them, and various robots and programs to exploit it. I'm certian there is some fun to be had with the game, but that sort of thing is a definate turn-off for me.
As for an alternative? If your 13yo can see past the Lego graphics, Puzzle Pirates is an excellent game. I has an excellent chat filter (scupper those bancacles!), a second-to-none, 24hour support system, and host of other wonderful features. It also has a large population of adult players if you fancy a puzzle yourself.

It is a lot better for you than sitting at a computer for hours on end getting no exercise.
OP. You know it makes sense. At 13 years of age he should be out and about with his mates, not stuck on a computer for hours at a time with his 'Virtual' mates.0 -

A 13yr old boy joining all the middle aged men at his local squash clubmight as well sign him up to the scouts.

The OP asked about the game, not an opinion on how to bring up their children..0 -
I honestly don't find it that addictive. I used to play EQ and that was far worse.
I imagine the downfalls of WoW would be ending up in a hard core raiding guild, and not being able to say no to turning up to raids. Some guilds will chuck you out if you don't show up enough... also you earn your equipment by turning up frequently.
You could be cruel and tell him he could play, but he's not to go in any instances above 5 manOh... and bear in mind the impact of a PVP server! Will he be a) deterred or b) spurred on to hours of revenge if he's killed by a random enemy player?
My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Whatever you do, talk him out of it - my 15 year old played WoW incessantly and has only just relinquished membership for girlfriend and Age of Conan (which seems to be replacing WoW, although to a lesser extent as girlfriend now taking up most of his time). He also played Runescape and Guild Wars but returned everytime to WoW which I am certain is addictive and expensive - there is a regular fee to play plus he will need to buy gold if he gets really involved.***************************************
