The Sale of Good Act should definitely be invoked in this matter. It is quite clear on the supplier/vendor's obligations. In particular, this fact from the act lays out time constraints:

"If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)".

I do not think 48 hours is a reasonable time at all and you have the right to request a replacement, as defined by the act.

I wish you all the best in this matter - don't ever let large companies get away with stuff like this and publicise your plight as much as possible!

What I'll do is structure a letter tonight listing down the phone calls and who I spoke to, and state that I want a replacement, also mentioning the Sales Of Goods Act.

    Thanks for all the advice!

A few years ago i bought a MiniDisk player from Currys and after a while it stopped working.

I rang them, let them know and they said bring it in and we will look at it.

After a day or so they said they were going to send it away for repair and it would be back in xx days. UNLIKE me, i fought it and rang the manager and said that i wanted a replacement which was turned down flat! I advised him that i was going on holiday in a short while (which i was) and that this was the 'in car entertainment' on a 5 hour car journey (which it was!).

He turned that down as well. I went down the whole "blah expect goods to work for a reasonable time" and "back in a reasonable time in respect to repairs" and got the reply ....... 'well, who can tell what is reasonable'. WHATEVER i said to him, he came back and said that he thought it WAS reasonable.

Never liked Currys since. (Well, didnt like them before tbh especially with their prices and *NO I DONT WANT A GUARANTEE!!!!* salesmen).

I guess you have spoken to your local trading standards.
Also if you have home insurance legal cover I would pursue a claim through them.

I had thought that there was only a few reasons why people still use Currys:

Because you can get 5% off through the Egg website with an Egg card(sometimes 17.5%)
    Money off with Quidco.
Maybe you could also use a discount voucher for say free delivery.
Surely it can't be the prices as with numerous searches I find they usually will be pricey.Waiting for the right sale times(not the gimmick reductions and using the % off deals you should save a bit making them competitive.
As for the service you are getting ...terrible.

Finally,do you know what makes my blood boil.People who use the internet and don't do searches to save money only to go into PC World or Currys(and
Argos) etc just to give them over £100-£200+ more just for the same product
they could have bought online somewhere else.
Remember if you are not sure on the product see if they stock it and go to try it out at the store armed with your search listsincluding specs and prices.Your commission today dear salesperson 0%.Unless you want to price match and give me a discount, but only for a new one and not a soiled one.

Hi I have had a response from Currys today after contacting them over the weekend and it appears that the reason they were reluctant to offer me an exchange is that the washing machine is now end of stock and they are not getting anymore.

Therefore, I have demanded a refund (out of principal) and they have accepted. Will look for a new one tonight (from another supplier) and ask Currys to pick up the the faulty one in a fortnights time so I am not without a washer.

At least its taught me a lesson, Currys don't do Customer Service!!

    Thanks for all your advice.

Ive now had a phone call to say that they will replace the washing machine with an updated version at no extra cost!! Looked on the website and it is £200.00 more!!

This has taught me a lesson - to persevere and not be fobbed off!! Just wish they had said this at the start.

    Well chuffed.
