Hi everyone

It would appear to my untrained eye that my PC has died on me.

This error message appears when i try to boot up:

Windows 2000 Could Not Start Because the Following File Is Missing or Corrupt: \Winnt\System32\Config\Systemced.

It then tells me to repair this file press 'r'.

However, the PC is stuck and completely non-responsive.

I've also tried the safe boot option but to no avail.

I have a disk with W2k on it but how to I get it to start?

I'm well and truly stuck and praying that I don't have to fork out and buy a new PC which wouldn't be moneysaving in the slightest. My PC also has my wedding and my baby photos on it so I quite keen not to lose those either.

Here's hoping someone can save me a packet.

Regards

I googled my error messsage and got the microsoft page you mentioned but to be honest its all greek to me.

It presumes I can get access to my registry but I can't get to access DOS to edit it.

You need to boot the computer up with the Windows 2000 CD. You'll need to enter your BIOS (usually pressing del on start up) and make sure the boot order goes CD then Hard Drive. Then you should be able to follow the instructions.

    Just follow the instructions 1-8

    Ignore this bit
    - Remove the Promise Technology ATA66 PCI Controller

    And this bit
    - IMPORTANT: This procedure will not work on an active directory domain controller, because if you use the REPAIR folder system hive, then you are no longer a domain controller

And this - If the computer is a domain controller.....

You are not a Domain controller on a home pc. Have a go, good luck and let us know how its going.

I tried pressing del on start up and nothing happens.

The Pc just hangs and tells me 'to repair this file press 'r'' but the PC is non-responsive.

    Is there something I'm missing?

    Thanks

Yes, as soon as you press the on button press del (it also maybe F10, try both)

You should get a screen that looks like this:

My W2K disc doesn't seem to boot up automatically, I guess that's why I'm not able to go through the steps you suggest.

    Any ideas most welcome

I seem to be posting to myself, anyway here goes for another try:

A local firm has offered to fix it for £60...does this seems fare?

    Any advice gratefully recieved.
