My hubby infuriates me by sometimes buying Caster sugar which is so expensive. I just pop Ordinary Granulates Sugar into the blender and wizz away until it looks like either Caster Sugar or Icing Sugar, which ever sort i need. When my blender was broken, I used put the granulated sugar into a clear plastic bag and roll the sugar with a rolling pin, until i got the desired size, takes a bit longer but it still works. Hope that is of some help.20p savers club

Well done, Sarah!!! :T :T
I've made castor and icing from granulated in my food processor, but never used my hand blender for it! Now I know is it do-able in my hand blender, that will save me using up the big machine:T :T

I have read through loads of the chef threads, but can't see any mention of this.
I have a kenwood with the grinder attachment, I tried grinding granulated sugar to make caster. This worked really well and is a good saving when you bake alot. However tried contiuing to grind to get icing sugar, but although it looked white and powdery, it wasn't quite right and seemed more grainy than shop bought. It made nice butter cream, but no good just to ice buns.
Any ideas or tips?
Perhaps I tried to do too much at once?

I used to try, but gave up for precisely that reason, Ali. I have had more success with a Bamix [now sadly died] but it still wasn't icing sugar texture. Having thought about it over the years I reckon the only way I could do it would be to put the ground up caster sugar into the pestle and mortar and pound away, but frankly I'd rather either go without or save up a bit more - the cost of the electricity probably covers most of the difference! If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0

You might not need to grind the granulated sugar for baking. I've been using it as it is in all my cakes, baking and general cookery for years.
I started using it because at the time M&S granulated was the only suitable fair trade sugar available, but I found it gave very good results so I still use it.0 -
I have a 'bullet' blender, if you have one, the small cup, with the flat blade realy does work to make icing sugar from regular white sugar.
