Martin says 'get yourPC to download overnight' to save broadband charges with Plusnet but I have no idea how to do it - help please. Or do I have to stay up after 12?
I tried searching for this but had no luck. Apologies if it has been covered before

It depends what downloads you mean.
You can set Windows Updates to be downloaded at a specific time of day (or night). Simply go to Control Panel, Secuity Centre, Automatic Updates.0 -
you can use a download manager such as flashget and set it to do all your downloads between a certain time.0

Get a download manager that allow scheduling.
Getright is the best but this is a free one although I've not tried it:

If you mean downloads of - for example - updated versions of a Linux distribution then you need to get a download client with a scheduler built in.
There are quite a few of these available, both in the Open Source domain and as closed products, but it's difficult to give any recommendations here because these clients can be defined as File Sharing programs, and discussion about even totally legal use of these programs is not permitted on the MSE boards.0 -
you can use ezmacros and also download the free ezscheduler with it. It is a great bit of software, For my use it was the best out there.
A word of warning though I did this with F2S about 2 years ago and they threatened to cancel my account on two occasions even though I was only downloading about 3GB a month during metered time (was pushing about 260G+ in the evenings per month between 1am and 6pm 'un-metered' time)
After the 2nd warning letter telling me I had not change my ways I changed ISP and easily quadrupled my download speed and a whole raft of other features.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0
