when i got a eurostar service from ashford to paris, i was told that I did not need to buy a ticket for travel from tonbridge (my local station) to ashford, as because i was going by eurostar I did not need to. they let me on the train for free when i produced my eurostar ticket.
does the same apply for trains from say london to birmingham, do i need to buy a ticket from tonbridge to london if i am making this journey?
thanks

Yes.
And if you were thinking of travelling from Tonbridge to Edinburgh to Glasgow, you will need to buy a Tonbridge to Edinburgh ticket.0 -
yes
The only reason you get free from Tonbridge to Ashford is because there is a special rule that allows Eurostar ticket holders free travel on South eastern only.Ex-Employee of a Train Operating Company.
