Just a thought - you're not clicking a link in an email, or a bookmark are you?

When you say formatted the laptop, did you do a restore or reload the OS?

It could be the hosts file has been compromised, look for a file called HOSTS and see if there's anything in there that mentions Abbey??

I got something like this once, but it wasn't Abbey it was HSBC.

I contacted them, and they just said to do a virus scan and not enter any details. Virus scan didn't work though.

I eventually got rid of it by doing a system restore.

Operating System - i.e. Windows, in your case.

    Hi,

OS = Operating System, i.e. Windows XP, Vista etc.

I've seen this before and it was because a malicious entry got put in the HOSTS file, which in XP, is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

When you type an address in the explorer address bar, Windows first looks in its own HOSTS file to see if there's an entry there. Basically like a telephone directory, it looks up the IP address of the site. If there's a malicious entry in there, it will redirect what you type to the other website.

Sorry I'm a bit stumped now...

Hi m8, I have just downloaded firefox and it works fine on that, but even at that I still want it too work on IE

I went thru your steps there and noticed that the file in etc named hosts had been modified last month, I deleted it and managed to access the online bank thru IE no bother, Do I need to have a file called hosts in there? or can I just keep it deleted?

    Hi,

I don't use my hosts file either. It sits empty. We used it heavily at work before we installed our own DNS server.

Some people use it, as it supposedly speeds up browsing, but I've never found anything to be gained from using it in a domestic environment.

So you should be ok. If you use Zone Alarm's free firewall instead of Windows Firewall, it has an option to lock the hosts file to prevent it being hijacked.
