Can't open Yahoo/Hotmail emails and certain websites.

Options
First off, I'll introduce myself. My name is Chris and I am a technical idiot.
My last AV subscription ran out so I've been trying to use the free ones suggested in this weeks email. Tried AVG first as it was top of the list. I got right through to the end and it told me I still had an AV running so I needed to uninstall that first before going ahead with the new one. I uninstalled the old one but now I can't find the new one! Even when I attempt to install it again through download.com it doesn't do anything - it just thanks me for choosing it - and there is nothing in the control panels list of programs to suggest it is there.
Finally I got avast installed but ever since trying to install AVG, I can't check either my Yahoo or Hotmail emails. I can see the Yahoo one but just can't do anything with it (read, compose, delete etc.), the Hotmail just opens with a blank screen. I can only open certain websites too. This being one along with ebay. Can't open facebook at all and I'm beginning to get withdrawal symptoms!! Could this be connected?
Noticed a message which said something along the lines of "if you are seeing this, your browser settings prevent you from automatically directing to a new URL. Please click here to continue"
I'd do that if it stayed on the screen long enough!! I've cleared all my cookies, temp folder, passwords etc. but still having problems. I remember this happened to me ages ago but I can't remember how it was fixed!Any ideas guys and girls?

Yep, what was your old one, you may not have uninstalled it properly.

if you want to fully remove Nortons then use

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...val-Tool.shtml

    if Mcafee then

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

can be a legacy from those that is causing the problem

When I first signed up to Sky Broadband, it had Macafee installed. When that expired, I honestly can't remember which one I used but it was a freebie if that helps?

Avast is the only one in my Control panel so I'm guessing the AVG just didn't work.

I just used the Macafee removal tool et voila...everything seems to be working again. Obviously didn't uninstall Macafee properly and then it sent my pc beserk when I installed another antivirus! Gits!

Thanks for all your help people! :T

I'll keep you posted if it goes nuts!

That's the problem, the two most famous ones, Norton and McAfee are also the biggest pains to get rid of and usually (if you paid for them) the least value for money. Even if they were free I wouldn't install them (in fact I still can get McAfee Enterprise free).

  • I seem to have the same / similar problem.

Have removed McAfee now thanks for link above, but when I try and remove norton and run removal download it says it is "not signed so wont run"....what does this mean and how do I get it to work?

    Thanks.
    I will be rich :rotfl:
