I think it's the usual "pull a fast one and see if they get away with it" trick.

what happens if you are in your o/d and they decide to remove it? What happens to the money you owe? Sorry if this sounds stupid?

They charge you for being overdrawn and demand it all back.

I'm with BOS (the other part of halifax now) and have paper free banking. Got a "letter" saying they were reviewing my od facility. I panicked as I'm in it for most of the month as the interest rate is lower than the cc I'm paying off.

The review was supposedly a month or so from the letter date so planned to get myself out of the od and leave the cc overpayments.

BUT about 2 weeks later I got TWO IDENTICAL!!! letters through the post, on the same day saying that they'd recently written to me saying they were REMOVING my od facility (nope they didn't, they were reviewing it) and that it was incorrect and would be in place till May next year at least

I've had SO many problems with bos/hbos over the last while I'm at the end of my tether with them so I'm leaving asap. Due to where I live I'm a bit restricted with the banks available though

Same thing happened to me from the Halifax.I received a letter saying my OD was being reviewed. Then a few days later I received a letter saying sorry I had been sent a letter telling me the OD was being withdrawn (I hadn't) and that instead the OD was being renewed. Totally confusing. Stupid bit about it all was that I actually went into my OD this month by a few pounds due to a late payment in but before that hadn't used the OD for a couple of years. I only keep it in case my sums are wrong and I don't want to incur charges. If they get funny about it they can stuff it quite frankly as I thought I was a good customer so I don't expect to be penalised because they can't do their sums and have got into money troubles.
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.
  • Just had Halifax withdraw my £1500 overdraft with only 10 days notice. Have had to change all my DD's & wages to a different bank account. Surely they could have arranged payment terms over several months!! I only earn £1000 per month, so I would be £500 overdrawn.. plus charges of £5 per day!

Come on now Mr Angry. That is a first time poster on here and that was no way to welcome them. Everyone starts somewhere.

OP why don't you try popping into your local bank, having completed an income and expenditure sheet, showing what you could afford and attempt to negotiate with them. I hope you get something sorted.:)

    Hi Pania,

I have a Halifax OD of £4000, well it's now down to £3000 ish (ebay problem pending). Halifax are a nightmare. I cannot wait to see the back end of them, How a bank is allowed to behave like this is beyond me. The call centre staff are rude, staff in branch don't all know processes. I asked for my OD to be removed on an account and was told in one branch I needed to write off to get it reduced. Another branch the guy reduced it there and then!!

Look at banks that you can use with your post office. That way you don't need to be near a bank if you know what I mean.

    Good luck with your search.

    LL xx
