Patching up and painting outside of house

Options
Hi
I've found a good painter/decorator who has done some nice work for me inside the house. I recommended him to my friend who has given him a big job and by way of thanks he has given me a quote for the outside of my house at "rock bottom price".
Here are the details:
Front -
Walls - fill cracks and 2 coats of paint - £190.00.
Sofit, facias and gutters - rub down, fill where needed and 2 coats of paint - £280.00.
2 coats of paint to apex - £100.00.
garage door and frame - rub down , fill where needed and 2 coats of paint, Repair bottom of frames - cut out and fix new timber - £180.00.
There may be an extra cost if the render is coming away at high level.
Left elevation -
Same preparation as front of property , includes all masonry, woodwork and down pipes - £670.00.
Back elevation - £520.00.
Right hand side elevation as looking from the road may need scaffolding, but we will not know until we test out with our ladders, this will be costed on site.
Materials will be added on top.
I have a 3-bed detached house.
Is this a bargain quote?
Many thanks!

  • A quick tot up in my head gets that to nearly 2k + materials. If that's a bargain quote, then i wouldn't want to see his full rates.

    Thanks for the advice.
Bearing in mind that I live in Surrey do you now think it's a reasonable quote?
  • I can't say because i live in the grim and grimy north but i personally think that is over the top wherever you live.If you are happy with the quote and the guy doing the work then that's your call but i would at least get one or two more quotes for comparison.

BTW,my brother is a decorator and i showed him your quote. He said if he could charge them prices he would be retired now.

You'll always get people saying "I know a mate who had the work done for half the price" but to me, as a decorator, the quote sounds fair. Get a few other quotes if you're unsure.

£2000 for a 3 bed detatched house. I'm guessing it has 4 walls... so that's £500 per wall. That's not to mention the garage. Plus he'll be working from height which always has an element of risk and is slow going.

It's all about the preparation. That's what takes the time. The painting is the easy and fast bit!

How old is the house? How many windows? Condition? All wood? Barge boards? Eaves, soffits and fascias? Are they flaking? Are the walls dirty? Is the paint in good condition? Any doors in and out of the house? Are they painted?

If you're pleased with his internal work then you'll know what to expect.
