Tinny noise out of speakers

I have Windows XP Home Edition, browser is FF.
A couple of days ago, the sound coming out of my speakers was suddenly extremely echoey and tinny and its been that way ever since. Hasn't done it before, makes it very difficult listening to actual speaking, not sure how to fix it. The only thing I can think of, is that I downloaded BBCi player the same day it went tinny, so I have just uninstalled it, but the sound is still tinny, any ideas?

Sounds like either:
the bass has been turned down and the treble's been turned up. Controls will be on the speakers or in the control app for your soundcard.
The connector's come partially unplugged from the back of the pc. Make sure all the cables are plugged in firmly.
Some sort of virtual surround sound/3d audio's been turned on. Again it'll be a button on your speakers or in the soundcard control panel. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

How do I find the soundcard? Thanks for replying by the way, not very techie.A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition~ William Arthur Ward ~0 -
Physically you just need to follow the cable from your speakers to the back of your pc. The cable will probably have a lime green connector on it, or it'll plug into a hole with a lime green ring around it.
Play some music and if it's still not fixed it might be a software setting, so as for finding the control panel, there might be a program running in your system tray down beside the clock.
There will probably be the wee speaker down there either way. Double click it, then go to options, and tick advanced. Then in the main window there'll be an advanced button at the bottom right. press it and it should let you choose the bass and treble settings. Play some music and adjust the settings until it sounds right. My bass and treble are both in the middle.
There might be settings more specific to your sound card that you can change. I've got a creative card, so in my start menu I've got the creative audio console.
There's an EAX tab on it which does effects like adding echo and removing voices and stuff. Not all that useful, and it can !!!! up your sound if it goes wrong.
There's also a tab called CMSS 3D, which makes everything sound horrible imo. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Right, all cables are definitely plugged in properly.
I have looked for a program running in my system, next to the clock you say? I do not have any speaker icons but I have looked in Sound Effects on the control panel, and in RealTek Sound manager it says:
Back Panel>Line>Front Speaker Out>Mic In
Front Panel>Mic In>Headphone
EAX setting is None.
I can't find anything that says treble or bass. Any ideas?A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition~ William Arthur Ward ~0 -
