I would imagine eBay is probably the best place to get secondhand (and therefore cheap) audiobooks. iTunes isn't that expensive compared to a lot of places, and it's also very convenient.

LibriVox has free user recorded audiobooks of works that are in the public domain; depending on the sort of books you're after, you might be able to find some of them there.

I imagine you'd get the CDs on eBay; you might be able to get downloads, but I don't imagine anyone offering them would be doing so legally.

If you want the convenience of downloading them immediately, it's going to cost you unfortunately. Impatience is a costly vice...lol

eMusic. 25 music tracks, 2 audiobooks and £4 quidco for taking up their trial.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

audiobooksforfree.com has heaps of old stuff. You got to look hard for something professional sounding though and the higher the bit rate the dearer they become.
If you happen to have a Kalashnikov assault rifle they also do a customized magazine clip with built-in mp3 player pre-loaded with audio books.

"Player could be used on its own or it could be attached to the Kalashnikov machinegun instead of the ordinary magazine."

Site itself was recommended in The Times so pretty sure they're ok.
