Advice for a friend

A friend recently bought a flat. It had a survey and all. They arrived to read a note from the seller saying that the night before they had smelled a weird smell in a plug (for the shower). They want to make the previous owner pay to get it replaced. I say they bought the place and so it's now their problem (plus it'll cost so very little to fix). What do you think?

Surely not!
A shower should have it's own fused (30amp I think!) supply hard wired to the main fuse board with an RCD.
It was thoughful of the previous owner to let them know if they suspected a problem in fact!
If it has become faulty after exchange, then it's the new buyers' problem.
A survey isn't a guarantee or a predicitive document. It is an indication, based on observations made at a specific point in time, to identify if there are and potentially serious concerns with a property that are likey to result in the BUILDING SOCIETY/LENDER losing the money they have agreed to lend against it.
If they wanted to inspect every aspect of a house, they should have paid separately for an independent WIRING INSPECTION BEFORE agreeing to buy it which may/may not have identified a problem, but only if it already existed, which it may not have done!

I thought they meant a plug that stops the water running away ... and a smell being a drains smell.

Welcome to the wonderful world of property ownership. It has it's positives and its negatives. one of the negatives is if it breaks you (or in this case your friend) have to fix it.
